Lavatone - Dark Ambient, Drone and the Beam
Lavatone is an experimental dark ambient, drone, and noise project created by musician Drew Holder in Amarillo, Texas.
Founded in 1994, Lavatone has evolved through decades of experimentation with sound, texture, and atmosphere. Today, the project is centered around the Beam—a singular instrument that has become the foundation of Lavatone’s current sound.
For the past three years, Holder has used the Beam to explore sustained resonance, distortion, feedback, and enormous, evolving drones. The result is music that exists somewhere between tone and noise, melody and vibration.
Lavatone’s sound is slow, heavy, and immersive. Drones stretch and shift, harmonics emerge and disappear, and layers of sound build into a world of noise—vast, dark, and constantly changing.
Rooted in the vast landscape of the Texas Panhandle, Lavatone explores the darker spaces between sound and silence.

Basement Starcraft begins as a quiet set of instructions for coaxing a star into existence using breath, dust, and patience. Low drones and fragile textures circle a hidden furnace, something small but steadily growing. But, the process slips out of control. The air thickens, the sounds turn ritualistic, and the boundary between creator and creation begins to blur. By the end, the experiment has failed—but something has taken hold, still burning behind the water heater.
